Read-Along: SHADE Chapters 12-18

Potato Bin.

That's all I got for an intro into today's read-along guest post. HOLLA. (Read-Along reading schedule can be found here.)

Hi, everyone! Welcome to the second day of the Shade series read-along! I absolutely love this series, and can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this particular section of book one, Shade.

But first, here’s a little about me!

I’m Alyssa, of The Eater of Books! blog. I’m currently a high school senior in Maryland, and I’ll be attending Johns Hopkins University in the fall to major in environmental engineering. I’ve loved reading ever since I learned how to read, and I can’t imagine NOT loving books! I’ve been familiar with the Shade series ever since the first book, Shade, came out! The setting of the series is in my home state, and SO CLOSE to where I live in Maryland! That was enough to pull me in, and I am so glad that I decided to read Shade. This series is definitely one of my favorite Young Adult paranormal series.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jeri in met 2012 at Constellation Books, for the release part of Shine, the last novel of the series (picture above!). I can honestly say that she is a fantastic and lovely person, and she has so much patience! She answered every single one of my ten thousand questions, even when some of them didn’t make any sense!

I haven’t been blogging for very long – I officially started blogging in December 2012. However, I’ve been in the blogging world for many years, and of course, in the reading world for many more. I love blogging about the books I read, and I feel right at home with the book-blogging community.

So, down to business! I hope you all enjoy chapters’ 12-18 of Shade! Here are a few questions to correspond with the chapters:

(Beware! There may be spoilers within the questions, and the discussion!)

1. What do you think of Aura’s insistence that Logan would never turn shade? Do you think she is being naïve, or do you think she is denying something that she knows is a possibility?

2. What do you think of the growth of Aura and Zach’s relationship? Which side are you currently with – Logan or Zach? And how about that birthday outing?

3. What do you think of Zach’s revelation to Aura, about being born in the same minute?

4. Gina changed Aura’s non-red sheets, as we find out at the end of Chapter 18. What do you think Aura will do about this? How do think this will affect her relationship with Logan, and with Zach?

I absolutely love and hate this particular section of Shade, for many reasons. I believe that Aura doesn’t want to let go of Logan, and in that sense, she is truly naïve. Her naïveté is irritating at times, but it is only expected of a grieving girlfriend, right? But I still can’t wrap my head around why she insisted on lording over Logan for so long. No matter what people say, there is ALWAYS a physical aspect to a relationship, and Logan can’t provide that for her anymore. I think she needs to move on.

I am “Team Zach” – at this point, and beyond. Zach is so sweet and wonderful, and while he isn’t perfect, he also isn’t selfish. He’s seen Aura through her darkest of times and he stuck with her. I think that counts for a lot. And he has a Scottish accent!

And the plot thickens! I love that readers get clued in A LOT more in this section of the book. The “Last” and “First” concept is mind-boggling, but awesome. It explains a lot!

And how about Zach’s favorite song! “I Will Possess Your Heart” by Death Cab for Cutie actually wasn’t a song I was familiar with, until I read this book (I know, shame on me!). It’s a beautiful and haunting song! Go listen to it HERE if you haven’t already!

And that’s my take on Shade’s chapters 12-18! Please feel free to leave your thoughts and points of the discussion in the comments. I’ll be around on Twitter as well, sharing my favorite quotes of this particular section of the book, using the hashtag #ShadeReadAlong.

  1. This chapters were where I started being team Logan, I was loving the book, but hating some parts... I was liking Zach, but not enough... but hey! Zach right there was awesome, I don't deny it!

    1. She is denying! But I admit that I was really glad that she cared about Logan!

    2. I'm still on team Logan. Zach is awesome, but he is not Logan...

    3. Interesting! (though I hated it the first time, it was just another reason to have them connected)

    4. Oh well, I hated Gina there... think, it was the "I hate everyone except Logan" part.

    1. Awww, I hope you warm up to Zachary! But I respect everyone's love for Logan - he just didn't warm up enough for me.

  2. I think Aura suffered from denial. At least that is what I suffered. It's what tends to happen when something happens that you don't want to happen.

The growth and bond of Zachary and Aura's relationship was pure bliss to read throughout each book in the series. The introduction and progression between them- that bond really leaves a special place in my heart for them. And there is definitely room for Logan in there too. (my heart that is)

A major gasp came out of me when I read the revelation of their birthdays. The thought and talent that came behind that-- props to Jeri. It ties everything together.

I can say, if were me and the sheets... I'd google shop or sew my own 1/2 shade green, 1/2 shade red sheets. I'd cover the color I don't want shown with a comforter. RED LIGHT. GREEN LIGHT. LOL!

    1. YAY, I love that you love Zachary and Aura together! I really liked Logan, but not as a love interest. And OMG. Half and half. What an intriguing idea! :D

  3. I think Aura was afraid that Logan would turn shade, but I don't think she really believed it would happen. I think she always saw him as this very full, very creative passionate person. Too full of life to go dark.

I like how their relationship progressed, it wasn't instantaneous or too fast, even though the attraction was there from the beginning. I was team Logan from the beginning, at first I didn't like Zachary much (gasp!), but after reading the book a second time, I could really appreciate the kind of person he was. I think that if Logan hadn't died, Aura and Zach would have still gotten together.

I was surprised by it, intrigued, wondered where it would lead.

I didn't like it when Gina did that, I was mad on behalf of Logan!! Now I can see that she maybe had to do that. Aura needs to realize that what she and Logan have needs to end. Also, Gina understood how Aura felt, and the heartbreak that would follow when Logan left for good.
I would not change my sheets though, I would want Logan to be with me for as long as possible.

    1. I agree with the first thing you said about Logan - perhaps he was too full of life to let go just yet.

I think it's interesting that you think that Aura and Zach would have gotten together, even if Logan were alive. That's a nice thought! :D

I'm on the opposite side - with Gina. Move on, girl! But I know what you mean :)

  4. 1. Aura was in denial. I think it would be impossible to believe anyone you love could turn shade.

    2. I am Team Zach. I love how patient he is with Aura, knowing she lost her boyfriend. He likes her, but doesn't want to push her too fast.

    3. It's fun to meet someone that shares your birthday, but someone who was born one minute before you? Mind is blown! It's interesting to see how this factors into the story.

    4. I want to be mad at Gina, but I know she means well. Aura is fighting letting Logan go and I think her aunt was just trying to give her a start in that direction. I think Aura is still too hung up on Logan to give a relationship with Zach a real chance yet.

    1. YAY! Someone who follows basically the same trains of thought as me! Go Zach! :D

  5. 1. I think somewhere deep inside her, Aura knew that Logan was capable of shading, but she didn't want to believe it wold happen.

    2. I love the evolution of Aura and Zach's relationship. I'll admit the first time I read the book, I didn't much like Zach, and I couldn't figure out what his game was. But how he was with Aura? Love.

    3. That was the moment where I thought "Oh wow!"

    4. I gotta say, I was kind of mad at Gina for changing Aura's sheets. I know she was just trying to help, but I would have hated it if she'd done it to me. At the same time, it was what Aura needed to start the process of letting Logan go.

  6. I think she just didn't want to believe it would happen. I mean, Logan is a freakin' fireball! So full of life and energy, it's hard to imagine he would shade out.

I LOVE their growing relationship! The pacing and emotions and fears and expectations... it's all so perfect. I also really love that potato bin scene. Yowza! I would have freaked out to be in that situation in the first place, though. I also love the revelation about Zach's "special power" and what that means.

The birthday thing was pure genius on Jeri's part. That must have taken some serious planning. It brings up so many interesting avenues the story can take!

As for the sheets... I think the decision she makes about whether or not to change her sheets is a good indicator of how she'll progress in the story. Either she's going to move on and keep the sheets Gina put on her bed, or she'll hold on tight to Logan and her past and change them. It's kind of a defining moment for her in this book, I think.
