Team Kilt Con: RECAP

Team Kilt Con was [INSERT INDESCRIBABLE ADJECTIVE HERE].

Guys.  It’s IMPOSSIBLE to put into words the experience of Team Kilt Con. It was like Christmas, your birthday and National Night Out all wrapped into one day. With sprinkles on top. I had to pinch myself a few times through the weekend just to be sure I wasn't dreaming.

So for those of you that weren't able to be there with us, here is an informative post to let you know what went down.  HOWEVER. Some things that happened at Team Kilt Con have to stay there in a little box never to be opened again.

Team Kilt Con (TKC) didn’t officially begin until Friday night, but some of us found ourselves at Leviticus Tattoo Shop in Minneapolis the day before to fulfill a quest that started innocently on Twitter one night.  Jen S., Kim, Jeri, Lynn and Jen D. all got tattoos related to Team Kilt while Toby, Nikki, Amy and ZOGAN hung out for moral support.

ZOGAN spent a good amount of time hanging out at the koi pond (Photo Credit: Jeri Smith-Ready)

Here’s a look at the finished products.  (Don’t worry if you can’t see the tattoos very well.  We’re going to do a follow up post in a few weeks so you can see each one and hear the story behind them.)

And then Team Kilt Con officially started.

Friday night began with an ice breaker game in which each person had to guess what SHADE related character was written on a tag stuck on their back by asking others in the room questions that could be only be answered with a "yes" or "no". Poor Kim got stuck with the hardest one of all…Deirdre Murphy.  It took her awhile, but she got it!

After introductions were made all around the room, Jen S. and Amy “treated” everyone to the AMEN Show. (Amy + Jen = AMEN) The AMEN Show was a skit in which Zach and Logan (played by Amy) meet Edgar Allen Poe, Jace Wayland, Albert Einstein and Tinky Winky from Teletubbies (played by Jen) all  while waiting for a bus to take them to Team Kilt Con.  There were equal amounts of laughs and eye rolls.

Open Mike Night started and ended with Jeri reading an extended scene from SHATTERED that left us all speechless.  LISTEN TO ME RIGHT NOW.  All those schmexy scenes we’ve read in SHADE, SHIFT and SHINE have been preparing us for this scene.  It was….really something.  The best news of all though? Zachary’s point of view is real and authentic.  Jeri isn’t kidding when she says she has really connected with Zach.  It was obvious in this reading.  Oh, come on July 31.  COME ON.

The rest of the evening was spent outside on the patio talking smart.  We all had so much to say, in fact, that when we realized it was 2:00am we decided to blow off our planned slumber party and hit the hay.

Saturday started with a heated battle of Jeopardy hosted by Amy. (Check out her mad Jeopardy board making skills!) Three contestants ended within $200 Jeri dollars from each other and the winner was determined by a final Jeopardy question that could only be answered with: What are Obsidians?  In the end, Judy was crowned “Irish Princess”.  (That girl is a walking SHADE series encyclopedia, yo!) Jen S. wasn’t bitter.  At all.  Not even a little bit. Nope.

The Q&A with Jeri took a turn into a “What happens with so and so in the future of the SHADE world?” Many of the people at Team Kilt Con where concerned about the well being of Hazel Cavendish and Jeri assured us all that she is at peace. Thank goodness.

A giggle fest ensued during the “Music of SHADE” portion of our day.  Everyone put their MP3 player on shuffle and hoped that the song that popped up best matched the SHADE related music question.  The biggest laugh of the session had to have come when Amy’s MP3 player selected “Good Girls Gone Bad” by Cobra Starship during the question, “What song would you pick to dance dirty to with Martin?” The bleating sheep sounds of that song put us all over the edge of giggle cliff.  It was also quite entertaining to watch Lynn act like a Frightened Rabbit.  That’s an image that will stick with me forever.

Watching the presentation Jeri put together for the “Locations of SHADE” was so cool, you guys! WE GOT TO SEE AURA’S REAL LIFE HOUSE!  AND THE KEELEY’S, TOO!  It was surreal to see the exact locations of key moments of the book.  Like the potato bin and the spot where Zachary chased away the shades on the U.S.S. Constellation. We even got to see a picture of Zach’s green Mini Cooper parked outside Aura’s house (complete with high quality graphics!).  I think everyone of us is dreaming of visiting Ireland and Scotland after seeing Jeri’s pictures from her trip there while conducting research for SHINE.

I’ve just now realized that a winner for “The Casting Couch” was never selected!  I think we were all so busy oogling pictures of beautiful people that we got sidetracked, lol.  As the writer of this recap post, I hereby declare my picture of Matthew Lewis as Zachary Moore the grand prize winner of The Casting Couch.  There.  I’m sure there will be NO protesting of this at all even though my picture was found in THE TRASH Sunday morning.  WTF, yo!

SWAG BAGS were given out next.  HOLY.  MOLY.  Each person that came to Team Kilt Con was asked to bring a piece of swag to share with everyone and just look at all the AMAZING goodies we all went home with: Team Kilt keychains, Starry Night nail polish, 2 different book thongs, bottle caps with spiral patterns (EEEEEP!), purple/red/yellow nail polish, tissues & jolly ranchers, Jamaican style Ginger Ale, coffee mugs and wine charms. It was Christmas SHADE style!

And then there was karaoke.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, here are about 20,000 words for you:

Special thanks to Judy G., Christy B., and Kim C. for use of their photos. <3

EDITED TO ADD: Oh! Oh! Oh! I forgot to mention something!  The Shade Boys have actual video footage of a very important song that was sung on this very special night.  You should go check out their Tumblr post.

To say Team Kilt Con was fun would be the understatement of the day. It was magical. One of those moments in time that can never be recreated. Thank you to Amy, Jen D., Kim, Toby, Lynn, Aydrea, Erin, Christy, Judy, Nikki and Lynna for making the trek to Minneapolis and celebrating Team Kilt.  And, Jeri?  Thank you not only welcoming us crazy fangirls into your life, but for giving us a weekend full of memories that we will all treasure for the rest of our lives.

TEAM KILT FOREVER.

<3 Jen S.

    2. Looking at all the pictures is bringing happy tears to my eyes. I keep having to surreptitiously wipe them so my co-workers don't notice. They wouldn't understand even if I could somehow explain. <3

    4. I *know* I took a video of the AMEN skit, but my camera ate it. So, Jen and Amy, you're safe at least as far as I'm concerned. (Though I know I wasn't the only one video-ing it ...)
